United Complete Roster with Jo Lual-Acuil Jr

Melbourne United is pleased to announce the signing of 7’0 centre Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. for the 2019/20 NBL season, with his signature officially completing Melbourne’s contracted 11-man roster for NBL20.

Lual-Acuil was born in South Sudan, before moving to Australia at six years of age.

During his junior season at Baylor University in 2016/17, he started in all 35 games and was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive and All-Newcomer Teams. His athleticism and shot-blocking prowess were standout features of his game on his way to averaging 9.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game for the Bears.

After a tremendous first season at Baylor, Lual-Acuil returned for his senior year in 2017/18 and in a December game against Savannah State, he recorded a monster double-double of 31 points and 20 rebounds.

His versatility and presence on both ends of the court saw him selected to the 2018 All-Big 12 Third Team with averages of 14 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.

Most recently, Lual-Acuil suited up for Hapoel Galil Elyon in the Israeli National League. He again demonstrated his ability to take over games, averaging 16.6 points and 10.5 rebounds, to go along with a league-high 2.3 blocks per game.

Lual-Acuil is a proven rim protector with an innate shot-blocking ability, while also possessing a polished offensive game in the paint.

The addition of Lual-Acuil adds another strong inside presence for United, to go along with the likes of Shawn Long and Alex Pledger in the frontcourt.

Earlier this month, he suited up for United in a closed pre-season hit-out against US college team California Baptist University Lancers and had a major impact on the game. Lual-Acuil finished the game with 17 points and 6 rebounds while logging a game-high +/- of +11 in 23 minutes of action.

Against Chinese Basketball Association team Zhejiang Guangsha Lions, in United’s first official pre-season game on Sunday, Lual-Acuil again starred with a team-high 20 points and 6 rebounds, to go along with an equal game-high +33.

The signing of Jo Lual-Acuil officially completes United’s 11-man contracted roster for the 2019/20 NBL season.

Melbourne United’s 2019/20 NBL fully contracted roster: David Barlow, Chris Goulding, Shea Ili, Shawn Long, Jo Lual-Acuil, Mitch McCarron, Sam McDaniel, Alex Pledger, Casey Prather, Tohi Smith-Milner and Melo Trimble. Development players: Jack Purchase and Sam Short.
