The Cairns Taipans and Adelaide 36ers have gotten their preseason road trips off to a positive start, with both sides securing wins last night.
Cairns defeated South East Melbourne Phoenix in overtime 106-102, while the 36ers took down the defending champion Perth Wildcats 90-84.
It marked the first NBL20 preseason matches that pitted two NBL teams against each other, providing a mouthwatering sneak peak at what’s to come in the regular season.
Returning Taipans import DJ Newbill led the way in their overtime victory, with the 27-year-old recording 26 points on a highly effective 9-of-12 shooting from the field. Newbill also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in a strong 32 minutes of action.
Majok Deng made a positive offensive contribution with 20 points, while other notable individual performances included Scott Machado (eight points, 14 assists), Cameron Oliver (17 points, eight rebounds) and Kouat Noi (13 points, eight rebounds).
For the Phoenix, import point guard John Roberson led all scorers with 25, while Kendall Stephens (19 points), Tai Wesley (16 points, seven rebounds, six assists) and Ben Madgen (13 points, six rebounds and five assists) all played well.

Adelaide leaned on their depth to get the job done over Perth, with 11 players playing 15 minutes or more, and every player who saw court time scoring at least three points.
Deshon Taylor was the leading scorer with 20 points, while Eric Griffin (15 points) and Jack McVeigh (13 points) added value off the bench.
The Wildcats were led by Bryce Cotton with 23 points and six assists, with other double-digit scorers including Damian Martin (11 points), Dario Hunt (10 points, six rebounds) and Mitch Norton (10 points).
