The Cairns Taipans have announced that Nathan Jawai will remain at home and has committed to the upcoming #NBL20 season. The new deal will see Jawai in orange for his fourth consecutive season with the club, and the fifth in Far North Queensland in his career that first began with the Taipans.
Last season, Jawai averaged 10.1 points per game and 5.2 rebounds – almost doubling his output from the previous year – and Taipans Head Coach Mike Kelly said he was pleased that the long-lasting relationship between Cairns and their homegrown hero would continue.
“We are happy to keep a totally committed and dedicated Nate on our team. Nate and the Taipans has been a great pairing, and we know the fans will be just as happy as I am that this basketball story gets to continue,” said Coach Kelly.
“We’ve had great discussions regularly over the past few months and it really came down to just landing on an agreement that suited both parties, and it’s fun to be on the same page.
“We’ve both used the off-season space and time to reflect and determine the best way for this team to win. Nate wants nothing more than to bring a championship to Cairns.”
The 32-year old enjoyed a successful NBL off-season after securing a contract in France, where he suited up for 14 games in the Pro A League. For Levallois Metropolitans, Jawai averaged 5.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13 minutes a game and has been on the court with Coach Kelly regularly since he returned.
“Nate looks and feels great right now, and he’s maintained his fitness levels after a demanding playing schedule in Europe. He’s more determined than ever to help the Taipans win and he’s had really good workouts since he’s been back,” said Kelly.
Following the recent news regarding Tom Jervis’ retirement, Jawai joins the Taipans 2019/20 line-up which currently consists of Cameron Oliver, Jarrod Kenny, Kouat Noi, Majok Deng, Mirko Djeric and Fabijan Krslovic. The Taipans have two import players and two more local roster spots to announce in the coming weeks.
