Illawarra Hawks Set To Bring NBL Back To Canberra

The Illawarra Hawks have announced that they will be returning to the nation’s capital with another action-packed game this 2019/20 NBL Season.

After successfully bringing the NBL back to Canberra for the first time in ten years in January, the Hawks will once again be returning to AIS Arena with a blockbuster game against the Brisbane Bullets on November 3.

In what has been a huge off-season for the Hawks, they will be bringing star power to Canberra with the likes of global teenage superstar LaMelo Ball, NBA veteran Aaron Brooks and powerhouse Josh Boone all new additions to this season’s line-up.

The partnership between the Illawarra Hawks and ACT Government will continue with a funding agreement finalised. Illawarra Hawks General Manager, Mat Campbell has confirmed that the club will bring another NBL game to Canberra this season in a bid to continue its expansion of the Hawks pathways programs to regional areas.

“We worked very closely with Basketball ACT and the Canberra Capitals as well as developed a strong partnership with the ACT Government last season. We hope to continue building on these relationships to ensure we are able to return to Canberra in the future. There is a huge basketball following in Canberra and one of the main objectives for the Hawks is to ensure we keep building and expanding our reach.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry stated:

“This is great news for Basketball ACT and Canberra’s passionate basketball supporters.”

“Basketball has a proud history in our community, with thousands of players across all levels and a record of having produced great athletes and teams – from the elite end such as the former Canberra Cannons and the champion UC Capitals, through to the junior development pathway, our great local clubs or the Aussie Hoop-ers that are just starting out on their journey.”

“Teams like the Illawarra Hawks encourage participation and inspire young players to see the possibilities of pursuing a professional career in basketball and other sports.”

General public tickets for the game will be released at 10am on Wednesday, 18th September through Ticketek. Illawarra Hawks members will be able to purchase presale tickets 24 hours prior to general public release, on Tuesday, 17th September at 10am.
